Designing an effective billboard advertisement isn't as easy as it seems. Due to the viewers of your display moving past, it is very important to make sure that the billboard is; eye catching, easy to read, uses appropriate colours, and provides the most important information about your product or service.

Good and Bad Billboard Design
Billboard design can have a large impact on the response of potential clients. If a billboard has a poor design, its effectiveness can be severely diminished. The billboard must be have a clear and concise message. Outback Cafe is located off the Warrego Highway at Jondaryan. They serve Coffee, and provide breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. They are Open 7am-9pm. Although Outback Cafe want to display all this information on their billboard, it is impossible to do so, and all this information clutters the display.
Providing a clear and concise message about Outback Cafe will help to direct traffic to the Cafe and its services that it offers.
Fonts
Bishopp strongly recommends using standardised fonts which are straight forward and easy to read. Fonts should be bold, eye catching and simplistic. When potential customers drive past a billboard, they have a limited amount of time to read, decipher and remember your message. Therefore the font needs to be easily distinguishable.
Colour section
Adding colours or colour themes to the advertisement are a great way of attracting attention. However certain combinations of colours can detract from the readability of your advertisement. From the above/below pictures you can see that combinations of colours drastically change the appearance of the text. It is best to use contrasting colours, as it makes readability easier- if you think it's difficult to read on your computer screen, imagine what's it's like driving past at 100kph!!!
